10 Things I Learned About Being Young in New York (Gawker)

Tongue ‘n’ cheek, obviously (or not so obviously?).

Coincidentally, this morning I also drew up a list of “Things People Have Called Me on the Internet.” I’m thinking this piece will give me lots of fresh content to add to that list. Each name usually includes some variation of ’self-entitled,’ since that’s the automatic insult for all NYC students. On the whole, I will admit that I feel entitled to call myself self-entitled (meta?).

Epic (and depressing) comment thread alert.

NYU and New York Times Collaborate on East Village Local Blog (NYU Local)

I’ve been working really hard on this secret project, and finally last week we got to announce it publicly. NYU and the NYT have partnered to launch a hyperlocal blog catering to East Village neighborhood news, and I’m incredibly excited to be a contributing staff editor and developer with the project. Aside from the fact that the launch has (as expected) experienced a rather polarizing reception, I think that the team of people tasked with this mission are well-abled for the work, and can hopefully provide the kind of comprehensive (but fun and interesting!) community news platform East Village residents need and deserve. This project is especially close to my heart, mostly because it combines a ton of my interests (hyperlocal journalism, the East Village, community reporting, citizen journalism, etc.) into one awesome blog. I could continue to gush, but I should probably stop until we at least beta-launch (hopefully within the next month or so); we have a lot to prove–to the community, to the impressive and well-established blogs that have already been successfully reporting EV news, and even to ourselves. It’s been a ton of work so far, and it will probably only get harder from here, but I think in the end it will be well worth the time and energy.

    hey jess.
i’ve been reading your writing for ages now (since before the jess&josh blog move!), and i haven’t commented up ’til now.
but this time, i am frustrated and i feel the need to blab back at you for a change.
i was reading the Top Ten List you wrote and then made the mistake of reading the comments (oops!) and found there to be a tremendous amount of jessica roy bashing.
i know it means little coming from an 18 year old girl who’s got nothing (so far) to show for herself but oodles of glittering ambition, but i think you’re fantastic!
i love the stuff you’ve got to say, and even the times i don’t agree with you, or think that maybe you’re overanalyzing or over-stretching a bit, i still respect you so much for standing up to say it!
i think blogging is one of the coolest modern day revolutions, and it certainly takes gut to speak up.
i have read plenty of bashy-bashy online blogs that are done anonymously, or under pseudonym, but your stuff is always signed with your name.
you stand by what you’ve got to say, and are unfazed by criticism.
i don’t think there is anything wrong with youth writing about big ideas on life.
the only thing that makes adults thing they’ve got leverage is the fact that they have been around longer.
but the truth is, they are just peers. we are all equals, all the same.
the path they chose was simply a string of choices… and now you get to make yours. there is no saying that your choices are wrong because they are different.
woah, i guess i’ve sort of spun out of control there, getting a little carried away with the stream of consciousness.
point is, i wanted to tell you that i get a kick out of everything you do, and just kinda love you period.
    hope this is immensely creepy.
i have tremendous ambitions when it comes to my writing, but have always suppressed and shoved them into a tiny closet inside my soul because i’m scared.
i’ve always had trouble putting my name on my writing, and i am very proud (is that condescending?) of you for doing so repeatedly, and not letting the blows that land upon your head for it get to you.
    major props, sister.
    never stop trying!

i hope this san fransisco thing works out for you.
i LOVE the city myself… i always hate to leave!
and i hope you find the amazing job young talent like you deserves!
you inspire me, and for that i thank you.

also, please don’t put out an online restraining order if all this seems incredibly creepy!
